Growing up on the farm, we often said that you were given two ears and one mouth to listen twice as much as you speak. The value in this saying is the concept that for one to learn, grow, and develop, one must first listen, absorb, and reflect. As many people find out, this is not an easy process. However, we can help you through that.
One of the main central features of communication is to listen with an open mind, to take a deep breath, and to try to understand where the person who is speaking is coming from. Often times, when we are speaking of difficult topics or situations, we find ourselves experiencing raw emotions, and instead of listening patiently and lovingly, we often jump to conclusions, make assumptions, and prepare our retaliatory remarks.
After we have listened and reflected on what is being said to us, we can then formulate a response to ensure we are communicating as effectively and assertively as possible., being as fair as possible, standing up for yourself, promoting boundaries, and building self-esteem.
Many clients come into our offices with the one goal: to work on communication! Communication requires at least 2 people, one to speak, and one to listen. Before we speak, we must have an intention and articulate that intention as best we can. Afterwards, the next person must listen to what is being said, and then interpret what the intention is, based on a variety of factors. An open mind from both parties is critical to ensure that the interpretation is as close to the intention as possible, ensuring clear, concise, communication.
Just like going to buy a new vehicle, you want to make sure the sales-person listens attentively to your needs, concerns, and answers your questions, before making recommendations that fit your requirements.
