Is Valentine's Day Just Over Commercialized?

Learning To Love Again

Valentine’s Day was never a priority for me. I viewed it as a commercialized spectacle, believing that love and romance should be woven into our daily lives. That perspective shifted dramatically when I became a parent.

Learning To Love and embracing Valentines day

The arrival of children brought unexpected challenges to my relationship with my partner.

Despite eight years of happiness and resilience, the post-parenthood reality hit us hard. Studies confirm what I experienced firsthand: for most couples, relationship satisfaction dwindles drastically after the birth of a child.

Reflecting on my journey and delving into research, it's evident how easily relationship discord can creep in during the whirlwind of new parenthood. The abrupt shift in identity, coupled with sleep deprivation and overwhelming responsibilities, can strain even the strongest bonds. Without proactive measures to nurture intimacy, provide support, and manage conflicts, the stress of parenthood can take its toll.

That's why I'm passionate about equipping expectant and new parents with the tools to thrive in this transformative phase of life. Prioritizing self-care and relationship maintenance should not be sacrificed on the altar of parenthood.

In hindsight, I realized that neglecting our relationship only compounded the challenges we faced. My partner craved connection, while I felt too overwhelmed to provide it. Making time for intimacy and shared experiences could have alleviated some of the strain we felt as parents.

Valentine’s Day serves as a poignant reminder to prioritize romance and intimacy in our lives.

It's an opportunity to celebrate our partners and reignite the spark that brought us together. Planning a novel activity or taking the time to connect without distraction can release dopamine, oxytocin, and endorphins, which serve to deepen our connection and attachment.
